Dr. Philip Adamson, Windsor, Ontario, Senior/Open Piano

Dr. Philip AdamsonRecitalist, recording artist, collaborative musician, orchestral musician, répétiteur, vocal soloist: Philip Adamson’s professional performing experience has been varied and wide-ranging. He studied at the Banff Centre and at the University of British Columbia with Boris Roubakine, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree. Graduate studies at Indiana University with Marion Hall culminated in a Doctoral degree in Piano Performance. He also studied in London, England with Kendall Taylor (piano) and John McCabe (contemporary British piano music).

Philip Adamson’s solo recitals frequently explore less familiar areas of the repertoire, and he has given first North American performances of several works from the twentieth century British and French piano repertoire. He has performed across Canada and in the U.S. and Mexico, and has been heard frequently on CBC. An album of piano music by the French composer André Jolivet appeared in 2004 on the Centaur label; reviews have commented on his “formidable technical prowess” and “powerful performance.” A second recording project is in the planning stages. Formerly a faculty member of Carleton University, the University of Ottawa and the University of Manitoba, Dr Adamson has taught for many years at the University of Windsor. His unique approach to piano technique has been highly successful, and has resulted in interactive presentations and master classes on the subject. His courses on piano pedagogy have included placement of pedagogy students in private studio “mentorships” across the city of Windsor. He served for eight years on the Board of Directors of the Canadian University Music Society, including a term as President. He has lectured and performed several times at the CUMS annual conferences. Philip Adamson is also active as an adjudicator and clinician.

Robin Lynn Braun, Vancouver, BC, Strings

Robin Lynn BraunCanadian born violinist, Robin Lynn Braun, a winner of the 1994 Youth Competition, she made her debut at the Centre In the Square. In 1998 she was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Ms.Braun has appeared as soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony, Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, and Missasauga Symphony and has given recitals throughout Canada, USA, Brazil, Mexico and Europe.

Recently she participated at The Festival of the Sound (Ontario), International Music Festival (Mexico), 2002 and 2003 European Music Festival (Hamburg, Germany), Orvieto Musica Chamber Festival (Orvieto, Italy) and QuartetFest.  Robin Braun has given master classes at the Universidade Federal Do Rio Grande Do Sul Instituto des Artes in Porto Alegre, Brazil and at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. She has performed in Master Classes around the world for violin protégés as, Mauricio Fuks, Jamie Laredo, Martin Chalifour and Aaron Rosan.

Ms. Braun has completed with Honors a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance at Wilfrid Laurier University and a Masters of Music degree at Indiana University where she was a student of Mimi Zweig. Ms.Braun held a position of Assistant Instructor of Violin at Indiana University for two years and taught for the Summer String Academy Program at Indiana University. This past summer Robin played First Violin with the Canadian Opera Company for the complete Wagner Ring Cycle. Immediately following her studies in the States, Ms.Braun became a member of the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony for the 2003/2004 season and is currently performing in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in the First Violin section.

Mary Jo Carrabré, B Mus, M Mus, Brandon, Manitoba, Intermediate Piano

Mary Jo CarrabréMary Jo Carrabré divides her time between administration, teaching and work as a collaborative pianist. Her most recent appearances include the Canadian premiere of Erkki-SvenTuur’s Transmission for six pianos at the International New Music Festival in Winnipeg as well as Canadian premieres of two piano works at the New Music Festival in Cuba with pianist Judy Kehler Siebert.

Ms Carrabré has recorded three compact discs including the Juno nominated Jeté, featuring violinist Victor Schultz and premiered over 70 new works by Canadian and American composers.

Mary Jo holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Manitoba where she studied with the late Marek Jablonski and a Master of Music degree from the University of Western Ontario. She is the RCM Examinations Centre Representative in Brandon and is the Concert Convener for the Brandon Branch of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers Association.

Ms Carrabré has adjudicated throughout Canada, most recently for the Moose Jaw, Neepawa, and the Red River Manitoba Festivals of the Arts. She is currently the Director of the Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music at Brandon University.

Kathy Dornian, Calgary, Alberta, Junior Piano

Kathy DornianKathy Dornian holds an ARCT in Piano Performance from The Royal Conservatory of Music, A Bachelor of Music, a Fine Arts Diploma specializing in the Kodaly philosophy of education, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Music from the University of Western Ontario. She has also pursued post-graduate performance studies at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Her teachers have included Marilyn Engle, Peter Smith, and Edith Hambalko.

Kathy pursues an extensive and diversified career as a teacher and musician. She has been on the faculty at the Conservatory of Mount Royal College in Calgary since 1984 where she has built a solid reputation as a sensitive and accomplished accompanist, chamber musician and teacher. For many years she has served as piano coordinator of the Academy of Music, an enriched program for gifted youth. She is a faculty member of the Kodaly Diploma Program at the University of Calgary and an artistic collaborator with the renowned Morningside Music Bridge Program. Although her principal passions and pursuits involve piano pedagogy and chamber music, she maintains a continued involvement with teaching many other branches of music including Kodaly, theory, history and solfege. As a performer, Kathy has been heard in concert with many prominent and distinguished Canadian musicians. Kathy has traveled throughout Canada and the United Stated as a senior examiner for RCM and RACE and also maintains an active career as an adjudicator throughout Canada.

Winston Noren, Calgary, Alberta, Voice

Wintston NorenWinston Noren is a versatile musician who has been active as a teacher, conductor and soloist for over 25 years.  Since 1981, he has been a faculty member of the distinguished Mount Royal College Conservatory where he has a studio of over 40 voice students.  As well, Mr. Noren has given numerous master classes and workshops and is frequently engaged as an adjudicator for regional festivals across Western Canada.

Mr. Noren has extensive experience as a choral conductor and artistic director.  For several years, he conducted the Cecilian Singers a women’s choir, which was frequently recorded for broadcast by CBC Radio.  He has also been a conductor for the Alberta Summer Music Workshop, the Mount Royal Children’s Choir, the Calgary Gilbert and Sullivan Society and most recently, the Alberta Centennial Choir.  From 1997 to 2005, he was Director of Music at the Anglican Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary.

As a soloist, Mr. Noren, a baritone, has appeared often with several choirs in the Calgary area.  He is Past President of the Calgary Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a member of the College of Examiners for the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Shelley Younge, Woodwinds

Shelley YoungeAssistant Principal flutist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is a native Albertan with her Bachelor of Music degree from the prestigious Indiana University School of Music where her work led her to master classes with notable flutists such as Julius Baker (former principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra) James Galway, Walfred Kujala (piccolo player of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Peter Lloyd, and Jean Pierre Rampal, as well as many others. She has performed as a soloist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, the Edmonton Chamber Orchestra, and with such notable performers as Celtic harpist Mary O’Hara and soprano Lois Marshal. Shelley’s orchestral career has included work with as principal flutist of the Banff Ballet Orchestra, as well as performances with the Banff Festival Orchestra, Pro Coro Canada and the Alberta Baroque Ensemble., as well as numerous chamber music performances.  Renowned for her teaching, Ms. Younge held the distinguished position of Francis Winspear Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta Department of Music for several years, where she continues to teach. Her other activities as flute instructor have included the Music Camrose and MusiCamp Alberta provincial music camps, the Alberta College-Conservatory of Music and the Banff International Music School. Shelley has championed the music of new composers and has recorded several discs for the Edmonton Composers’ Concert Society.
